4 Mindful Experiences In New Zealand For Female Travelers

If you are looking for a place to feel a connection to the Earth, a space to take some time to breathe and simply be at one with the world around you, then I highly recommend the East Cape Lighthouse near Te Araroa on the North Island. Sunrise here is an incredibly special experience โ€“ this is the first place in New Zealand (and one of the first worldwide) to enter a new day. Also, the lighthouse offers stunning views out over the nearby Whangaokeno Island and the Pacific Ocean.

There is a short fifteen to twenty-minute walk from the car park, which includes almost 800 steps to ascend to the lighthouse, so ensure that you arrive with sufficient time to get to the top before the sunrise occurs, as it would be hugely disappointing to miss it!

On the day I visited, I sat with around 20 others at the base of the lighthouse in absolute silence as the light began to peek over the horizon. Within 15 minutes of the sunrise, everyone else left, and I was able to meditate and be completely at one with my surroundings for well over an hour. There really is no time and place better to recharge your mind, body, and soul than the very beginning of a new day.

With New Zealand being one of the safest places for solo female hikers, get back to nature in style by taking on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. There is nothing like a 19.4-kilometer walk to add to your self-care routine, right?

Jokes aside, the memorable Tongariro Crossing hike crosses volcanic domes and craters, vibrant blue crater lakes, and even the famous Mount Doom. (Yep, the Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings movies.) While the hike is fairly accessible to anyone of moderate fitness, mostly due to its well-maintained footpaths, it has some heart-pumping steep sections that will leave you feeling strong and empowered. Best of all, the views are mind-blowing throughout.

Following your hike, head to nearby Taupo which has numerous natural hot springs for you to take a soak and relax your muscles. The Otumuheke Hot Springs is a free selection of thermal rock pools – not one to miss.

Additionally, if youโ€™re interested in sustainability, head to the nearby Aratiatia Dam Release en route to the roaring Huka Falls. The dam releases into the river four times daily and is free to watch from viewing platforms. As the gorge fills up below and tumbles into rapids, learn firsthand about renewable energy; Aratiatia is one of nine hydro stations along the Waikato River, which together produce 10% of New Zealandโ€™s electricity.

3. Bradrona + Breast Cancer Awareness

The controversial story of New Zealandโ€™s bra fence has many elements of a fascinating tale โ€“ mysterious beginnings, opposing views, a worthy cause, and the power of collective action.

It all started when four bras appeared on a farmerโ€™s fence beside the main road near Cardrona in the Otago Region of the South Island, not far from Queenstown. The four bras became 60, then 200 โ€“ not something capable of escaping the scrutiny of locals and visitors. When the battle of the bra fence erupted, it attracted international attention and bras started arriving from around the world.

The community was split. Some regarded it as an eyesore. Others used the fence as a depository for bras of deceased loved ones who would have appreciated the idea of the bra fence and what it represented.

Eventually, the local government intervened, declaring it a traffic hazard, and ordered the removal of what had become 1500 bras. However, like any well-resolved conflict, a compromise was struck and the bra fence, now named โ€˜Bradrona,โ€™ was relocated 100 meters (328 feet) away on an access road.

Like any good story, the bra fence has a happy, though somber, ending. Bradrona is a place to pause and reflect on the ravages of breast cancer and pay tribute to those who have lost the battle with this dreaded disease.

A pink collection box is regularly emptied of donations for breast cancer awareness and research.

One of the best activities for women in New Zealand is spending time at the Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown. This beautiful wellness retreat and day spa is perfect if youโ€™re looking for some time away from the crowds to replenish and recover. While youโ€™re there, enjoy picturesque views of the stunning Queenstown landscape as you relax and unwind.

The Onsen Hot Pools have a variety of different services for you to choose from. You can get personalized spa treatments for one or more people like massages and facials. Most hot tubs have amazing views and prices include refreshments to enjoy while you soak. Prices start at just $100 for one person but go as high as $400. Whatever package you select, itโ€™s worth the splurge, though, and will be an unforgettable highlight of your stay in Queenstown.
